We hear so much about global warming and the hole in the ozone layer these days. Personally I am not totally convinced by it all as I find it difficult to believe that just 100 years can make that much difference to our planet which has been in existence for billions of years. I am sure that earth is capable of looking after itself.
We hear that “going green” and looking at other energy sources other than fossil fuel is the way to overcome this challenge to mankind. Now I happen to believe that this is a very sensible course of action for another major reason that everyone knows about but we do not hear the politicians mention as much. In a relatively few short years earth is going to run out of the natural fossil fuels such as oil.
We have to look at other sources of energy.
One problem with most of the ones that get discussed such as nuclear power is that they still need large sites with many buildings and the machinery to keep them going. Now I often wonder what will power those engines.
Mainly for this reason my favored new source of electricity is from renewable energy sources. We have so much water here which is incredibly powerful as we have seen in the recent tsunamis and floods and anyone who has ventured out with an umbrella will testify that there is plenty of wind around as well. Surely it is possible to harness the power of these forces in some way.
Unfortunately it still requires machinery with moving parts which needs to be built and installed at great cost initially and then services regularly. Perhaps we will find the perfect way to do it one day.
At this time, however, I feel that there is one source of green energy exists that has been around since our planet was formed and does not look like drying up in the near future. That is of course the sun. It always amazes me that an object which is so far away from us can still produce so much energy when it reaches us. Nevertheless it does and it seems silly not to grab some of that power and use it to our advantage.
Until recently the technology to do that has been incredibly expensive and not withing the average man’s budget. But there have been enormous advance in recent years. A big advantage in it also is that we do not have to rely on large utility companies to supply us with electricity using this. The sun is there for all of us to use in our own homes at any time.
You then need to get a detailed manual on how to install it. It is much easier than most people think it is going to be. You can just start small and have it to power the small appliances and then add to the system over time.
Then you will have a source of electricity to your home which is virtually free as there is very little maintenance involved. You will be getting cheap electricity and “going green” to save the environment at the same time, a win win situation.

Hey Trevor, I totally agree with your thoughts that global warming, i.e. climate change, is not something that we can really control very effectively without enormous cost. Even then, who knows what the unintended consequences might be. Interestingly, a neighbor of mine recently had commercially installed a rooftop full of solar panels on his house, and expects the unit to generate over 90% of his daily electricity needs. With government incentives, he expects full payback in as little as 4 years.

Hi Trevor: I totally support the idea that DIY is a great way to 'install' solar power – it just makes sense that something so powerful and so available be made use of in the most efficient way possible. It provides a great source of learning and accomplishment as well. If we are going 'green' why not make it a truly green experience of learning by doing it ourselves! With so much information available to us it would take very little effort to research and find all the information and support we need to get the necessary materials and create a plan of action to accomplish this project. Everything we can do to preserve this planet for future generations is certainly a win-win course of action! Thanks for the inspiration!

Well, I think Global Warming does exist, its not simply a myth! But rather than reacting to the changes, as you suggested, we need to be proactive and ensure that this doesn’t cause issues for our future generation. Some say we already might be too late, but I think websites such as these can push people in the right direction to step up and make a change. Just my 2 cents
